I grew up thinking if there is a God, then God must hate me. After all, God hates f*gs, right?
That was the message I heard growing up, especially from those claiming to know God. Because of that, I didn't seek a relationship with God until my early twenties and considered myself an atheist until 2020.
In 2020, I began to experience God's presence and was particular drawn to Jesus after three Christian individuals shared their stories with me. I started to pray, seek God, and read the Bible. In a short amount of time, I found myself feeling better both physically and mentally.
In my walk with God, so many things I battled with for years left. God changed so much about me. But my sexual orientation? God left it untouched.
I wasn't able to pray the gay away, despite being able to pray so many other things away. I slowly got wrapped up in non-affirming "ex-gay" ministries, believing they could help.
Yet nothing changed. I remain gay, and continued to desire partnership.
Wanting to discover the truth, I researched both affirming and non-affirming arguments. With God's gentle guidance and support, I shared my findings with others, especially via social media.
I realized others were interested in this topic and being a writer, I began to draft a book about my experience and findings while working on my Master of Divinity degree from Duke University.
This journey produced my first book, The Bible is Not an Anti-Gay Weapon, and led me back to one of my first loves: writing.
I started to rewrite books I wrote as a child, incorporating aspects of my faith and identity into new drafts. My characters are unapologetically queer and Christian - no compromising here!
It is my prayer that my writing will encourage you to more boldly live out your faith, and to also rest in the truth that our loving Creator loves you fully as the being He made you as. No "buts" or "what ifs" about it - you are loved fully, your queerness included.
